The Mekong Delta province of An Giang plans\u00a0to export about 5-10 tonnes of mangoes to the US in June, according to deputy director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, L\u1eef C\u1ea9m Kh\u01b0\u1eddng.<\/p>\n
Exports of mangoes to the US next month would be an important turning point for An Giang, paving a new path for the fruit, he said.<\/p>\n
The province had previously\u00a0focused on the domestic market and exports to China.<\/p>\n
He added that his department had worked with co-operatives with\u00a0mangoes that met\u00a0Vietnamese Good Agricultural Practices (VietGAP) in local districts to review the quality and quantity of the fruit for export.<\/p>\n
People\u2019s committees in\u00a0those districts had\u00a0signed a deal with Ch\u00e1nh Thu Export and Import Fruit Company Limited in Ch\u1ee3 L\u00e1ch District, southern B\u1ebfn Tre Province, to grow and export mangoes.<\/p>\n
The company has agreed to collaborate with Tri T\u00f4n and T\u1ecbnh Bi\u00ean\u00a0to build mango plantations that\u00a0meet international standards to export to choosy markets, especially the US.<\/p>\n
Director of the An Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguy\u1ec5n S\u1ef9 L\u00e2m said to develop the local mango brand, the department would\u00a0accelerate the issuance of codes to some areas in many regions, including Ch\u1ee3 M\u1edbi, An Ph\u00fa, Tri T\u00f4n and T\u1ecbnh Bi\u00ean districts, T\u00e2n Ch\u00e2u Town and Long Xuy\u00ean City.<\/p>\n
So far, the codes have been\u00a0granted to eighteen mango growing areas in An Giang that meet\u00a0export standards with a total area of nearly 244 hectares.<\/p>\n
According to the provincial Statistics Office, An Giang had nearly 9,700 hectares of mangoes in 2018. The area of mangoes meeting VietGAP standards was about 193ha with estimated output of 1,900 tonnes per year.<\/p>\n
