You may click the link to switch the active language.<\/p><div id=\"_17723\" class=\"inline-image\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3329 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/kingkong-vietsu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/17723_vai.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"479\" \/><\/div>\n<h4 id=\"caption_17723\" class=\"inline-image-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Vi\u1ec7t Nam has become\u00a0the second largest exporter of lychees, accounting for 19 per cent of the global market share.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Vi\u1ec7t Nam has become the second largest exporter of lychees in the world, accounting for 19 per cent of the global market share, according to the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS).<\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s largest exporter was Madagascar, accounting for 35 per cent of the global exports despite a low area of plantations,\u00a0said Sisir Kumar Mitra, an ISHS representative at the sixth international conference on longan and lychee in H\u00e0 N\u1ed9i late last week.<\/p>\n<p>Following was China with 18 per cent,\u00a0Thailand with 10 per cent and South Africa with 9 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>According to consumers and companies on the global market, the quality of Vi\u1ec7t Nam&#8217;s lychees was\u00a0much better than similar products from\u00a0India and China, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The ISHS representative said in terms of output, China ranked\u00a0first with\u00a02 million tonnes per year, followed by India with 677,000 tonnes and\u00a0Vi\u1ec7t Nam with 380,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having the second largest area of lychee plantations in the world after China, over 99 per cent of India&#8217;s lychees are consumed domestically.<\/p>\n<p>Nguy\u1ec5n Qu\u1ed1c H\u00f9ng, head of the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute, said Vi\u1ec7t Nam had\u00a0a smaller output of lychees against China and India but because of the harvest season and difference in seed quality,\u00a0Vi\u1ec7t Nam had seen strong growth in lychee exports.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Director of the B\u1eafc Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguy\u1ec5n Vi\u1ebft To\u00e0n said B\u1eafc Giang Province had\u00a0over 28,500 hectares of lychees trees, including more than 14,000 hectares produced under VietGAP and GlobalGap standards. The province\u2019s output was estimated to reach\u00a0150,000 tonnes of lychees this year.<\/p>\n<p>Besides domestic markets, L\u1ee5c Ng\u1ea1n lychees from\u00a0B\u1eafc Giang are available in many countries, including China, the US, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnamese lychees have brand protection in China, the US, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, Singapore, Laos and Cambodia.<\/p>\n<p>Vi\u1ec7t Nam has had 18 lychee growing regions receiving plantation region codes from the US Department of Agriculture while 36 other regions have reached export standards to ship to China this year.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, many scientific and technological advances have been applied in the production of longan and lychees. However, processed fruit\u00a0account\u00a0for only 10 per cent of total consumption volume.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fresh products will always face strict requirements on quality, traceability and quarantine of import markets,\u201d H\u00f9ng said.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, China\u00a0had\u00a0tightened quarantine, labelling and traceability regulations for Vietnamese fruit. Vi\u1ec7t Nam\u2019s businesses must update and strictly implement those requirements to\u00a0enter\u00a0the neighbouring market, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProcessed products do not face the same\u00a0quarantine requirements,\u00a0but\u00a0businesses need more investment to increase\u00a0quality and marketing activities,\u201d H\u00f9ng said.<\/p>\n<p>Nguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n Phong, an expert from the Southern Fruit Institute, said the\u00a0number of small-scale farmers growing rambutan, longan and lychees accounted for 70 per cent of domestic production, but they had suffered\u00a0huge losses\u00a0due to poor management and traders.<\/p>\n<p>The loss rate was\u00a0up to 25-30 per cent of output.
